As he begins to navigate unfamiliar circumstances and relationships, the novel explores freedom, belonging, intimacy, trust, and the challenge of defining oneself when the rules that once shaped life no longer apply.
 

Washington, D.C., is more than a backdrop to the story. Its contrasting neighborhoods, communities, institutions, and social worlds become part of the landscape through which the characters find their way.
