A lone figure with a backpack walks along a rain-washed street lined with brick homes and mature trees. A young sapling rises beside the reflective sidewalk, echoing the themes of growth and belonging in Cynthia Chatman’s contemporary novel in progress, The Sapling.

The
Sapling

Contemporary Fiction · Novel in Progress

The Sapling follows a young man confronting freedoms, relationships, and choices for which nothing in his previous life has prepared him.

As he begins to navigate unfamiliar circumstances and relationships, the novel explores freedom, belonging, intimacy, trust, and the challenge of defining oneself when the rules that once shaped life no longer apply.

Washington, D.C., is more than a backdrop to the story. Its contrasting neighborhoods, communities, institutions, and social worlds become part of the landscape through which the characters find their way.
