Nature
Nature gives me an endless variety of color, texture, light, and form to work with. I’m drawn both to the small details—a shifting patch of sunlight, the pattern of leaves, the texture of bark—and to the scale and quiet of a landscape. Whether I’m working in watercolor or oil, I try to capture not just what a place looks like, but what made me stop and look at it in the first place.

The landscape dwarfs the hikers, which is exactly what interested me. Their dark packs and red jacket give the eye a place to land, while the texture of the paper doilies adds another dimension to the watercolor as the snow and mountains spread out around them.

Sunset with Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is deliberately small here. What held me was the long path of light across the water, with that familiar silhouette waiting quietly at the edge of the sunset.

Red Hook Sunset
The sky was the subject here. I liked the way the gold light keeps breaking through layers of violet and gray, while the low dark horizon makes the whole sunset feel even larger.

Along Central Park
Rain makes the edge of the park feel softer and more private. The umbrellas are small against the trees, and I liked letting the greens and wet pavement carry most of the atmosphere.

Autumn Foliage
Sometimes one tree is enough. I used a stencil to build up the dense pattern of leaves, letting the gold and rust carry the painting while the darker trunk and quiet background hold all that color in place.

Prospect Park Path
The path keeps pulling you deeper into the painting, but that little pedestrian signal at the edge reminds you the city is never very far away. I liked that meeting of park quiet and urban detail.

Woods in Freiburg
Looking through the trees became more interesting than looking at them. Their dark vertical trunks create a screen, and the bright field and small buildings beyond become something you discover between the gaps.

Mystery Interior
I kept the boundaries deliberately uncertain in this collage. Trees, windows, an interior, a road, and even the birds seem to occupy the same space, which is what makes the scene interesting to me.

Botanic Garden
The garden was less about individual plants for me than the accumulation of greens. I liked letting the foliage break into patches of color, with the low strip of pink flowers acting almost like a bright underline.

I wanted the climbers to stay small. Their tiny figures give the pale rock and snow its scale, while the texture of the paper doilies adds another layer to the watercolor and helps the mountain feel less like a backdrop than the main presence.
